Edea - Spot stain removers

Designing Spot stain remover bottles

At Edea, we’re passionate about solving problems through design that makes a tangible difference. One of our collaborations brought us together with Melers, a laundry service company with a unique goal. The consumer market was lacking professional-grade stain removers, and Melers wanted to introduce a product line that not only solved this problem but also stood out on store shelves. Our mission? To design a distinctive, functional bottle that would house this family of stain removers—and to build a strong, cohesive brand identity around it.

Design brief: Function meets style

Melers approached us with a clear objective. They needed a bottle for their new stain remover products that would do more than just look good—it had to perform efficiently in both home and professional settings. We were tasked with more than just the bottle; we were also responsible for the overall branding, from product naming to the creation of a unified label system.

Initially, there were two directions for the project: either designing a graphic look for an existing bottle and group packaging or creating an entirely new bottle with a distinct graphic identity. Melers opted for the latter. This decision allowed us to completely rethink the bottle’s form and function, ensuring it met the demands of both users and the production line.

Performance & impact

The new bottle design had to achieve several design objectives:

Visibility and shelf presence: Given the product’s smaller volume of about 210 ml, the bottle needed to stand out despite its size. Its narrow shape allows it to fit efficiently on shelves, while its overall design ensures it grabs attention in a competitive retail environment.

Maximizing label space: Stain removers come with a lot of information—usage instructions, ingredient details, and safety warnings. We maximized the label’s space by designing a multi-page label system that allows ample room for necessary text without overwhelming the overall aesthetic.

Balance and stability: Since the bottle would frequently be handled in various settings, stability was key. We gave the bottle a low center of gravity to reduce the risk of tipping, ensuring it remained upright even in busy environments.

Production efficiency: Beyond aesthetics and user-friendliness, the bottle had to be production-friendly. Our design incorporated a flat surface along the side of the bottle, making it easier to transport on conveyor belts, ensuring straight alignment and reducing the risk of production bottlenecks.

Precise liquid administration: One of the core user needs was ensuring that the bottle was easy to use, allowing the right amount of stain remover to be applied exactly where it’s needed. The shape of the bottle and its tip makes squeezing the bottle smooth and effortless, giving users full control over how much liquid they dispense, making stain removal as effective and efficient as possible.

Creating a unified brand identity

In addition to the physical design of the bottle, we developed the entire branding for Melers’ stain removers. This included creating a series of product names that aligned with the brand’s message of professional-grade cleaning. The label designs were carefully crafted to present a consistent, modern, and trustworthy image across the product family. While Melers opted not to go for group packaging, we ensured the bottle designs would make the product range feel cohesive when placed together on the shelf.

A bold step for stain removal

Together with Melers, we didn’t just design a bottle; we designed a future-forward product family that will meet the needs of both everyday consumers and professionals alike. From the first brainstorming session we had together with Melers, to the final touches on the bottle’s sleek, functional design, this project embodies our approach at Edea: thoughtful, user-centered design that balances form and function.
