Valtra T6 – designed around the operator

The sixth generation of Valtra’s T Series brings significant updates to the operator’s working environment. The SmartTouch Gen2 graphical user interface and the Active Gen2 armrest offer two complementing approaches to controlling a versatile machine. At Edea Design, we have contributed to the development of the new T6, with our work particularly evident in the armrest design and the digital user interface design.

A tractor’s usability depends on how well its physical controls and digital functions work together. How does the drive lever feel in the hand? Is the right function easy to find? Does the display show the information needed for the task? This is where vehicle design and user interface design meet.

SmartTouch Gen2: more possibilities, less searching

The new SmartTouch Gen2 user interface features a 12-inch touchscreen. Interaction is built around familiar taps, swipes and drag-and-drop gestures. Operators can arrange screen views to suit their needs and save their preferred settings in user- and task-specific profiles.

From a vehicle design perspective, however, a larger screen is only the starting point. What matters is how information is structured: what stands out, what belongs together, and how the operator moves between functions. A good digital user interface does not need to show everything at once. Together with Valtra, we designed it to help the operator find what matters and understand what the machine is doing.

SmartTouch Gen2 brings tractor settings, automatic steering and compatible implement controls into a single environment. Customisable controls put frequently used functions within easy reach, while built-in guidance helps operators get to grips with new features. The familiar operating principles remain, with greater flexibility to adapt the setup to the job.

Active Gen2: straightforward, hands-on control

Not every operator or task calls for the same control setup. The new Active Gen2 armrest focuses on physical buttons and levers, providing direct access to essential tractor functions. Its modular design supports different configurations and needs.

Here, vehicle design is about how controls are positioned, how they feel, and how easily they can be distinguished. The aim is for the operator’s hand to find the right control naturally, making repeated actions comfortable without unnecessary reaching or searching. Simplicity does not mean less design. It means making thoughtful choices.

Bringing physical and digital interfaces together

In the T6, the connection between controls and displays is visible in practical details. A light bar on the redesigned hydraulic joystick indicates when the hydraulics are active. Adjustments made using either the SmartTouch or Active armrest are also shown on the A-pillar display, keeping feedback close to the operator’s line of sight.

Design makes these connections easy to understand. The movement of a hand, the machine’s response and the feedback on the display should form a coherent whole. When they do, the digital interface feels like a natural part of the machine rather than a separate system.

“The machine is very easy to handle. The controls in the cab are very user-friendly and designed to be very simple.”

More than 40 years of designing together

Beyond the armrest and user interface, we have worked with the Valtra team to help bring the T6 Series’ design language and technical features to life.

Our collaboration began in 1985 and now continues with another generation of tractors. Technology has changed over the decades, but the operator and their everyday work remain at the heart of the design.

Thank you to the Valtra team for your continued trust and long-standing collaboration. We are proud to play a part in making advanced technology feel natural to use.
